The tropical paradise is such a over used illusion of Second Life one can see it as a kind of nightmare. The tropical island plays both roles on our imagination. It can never just be a place, a atoll of islands in the South Pacific is either a prison of a paradise, a place to be cast away at crawling with Japanese soldiers who don't know the war is over or topless girls whose fathers invite you to have sex with them.

For the millions of people in the developing South Pacific Second Life must seem a kind of strange place, where the tourists images of their reality are made real, and the true conditions of life on volcanic islands with developing economies are invisible.

Firefox 2 on SharePoint 2010

Testing on Firefox 2.0 on SharePoint 2010 produces something that looks more like experimental art than a web page.

SharePoint 2010 and IE 6 Don't Do IT!!!!

For those of you who hate IE 6, SharePoint 2010 does not work well with IE 6, actually it works terrible. In my browser tests to date IE 6 is the worst browsers for SharePoint 2010.

I can hear web designers cheering. But for the millions of users who have had IE 6 on Windows XP rolled out this is a huge problem. Today IE 6 with Windows XP is the standard work platform. So now if I am trying to sell SharePoint 2010 not only do I have to get my boss to provide 64 bit production, test and even dev environments, I also have to get them to roll out IE 7 or IE 8.

I would love to hear the justificaiton that would sell this in tight economic times. I frankly don't see one. The improved accessibility and design ribbon is paid for in a heavy cost of desktop and server updates.

But that is just my opinion.

SharePoint 2010 in Linux

Well for those who hate IE6 and Firefox 2 haters will be happy to know it works like trash. Also with Firefox 3 it works fairly well on Linux.

The blogging tool in Linux is okay but one has to wonder why they still have problems given that blogging is such an established web tool.

Trying to get my head around waving.

Well some first impressions on waving.

First take is that waves are a kind of mix between IM and email, merging the real time and delayed time features of email, IM, and chat in to a personal collaboration suite.

Google has introduced a number of terms to indicate threads (waves) and parts of waves. You can start a wave, add contacts to a wave including bots which can be tasked to add to the wave. For example I have been using a Wikipedia bot which defines terms and provides links to data in Wikipedia.

Honest opinion, I have been playing with it for 3 days and all I have is a disorganised mess. It is my experience that chats forums are perhaps one the worst collaboration tools, and I have a hard time seeing how these are any different. I have completely lost track of two waves I have been working on, I have no idea where to write and I can't tell when people are writing to me.

I don't want to say it is a dog like Google Docs just yet, but I am finding it hard to learn whereas I was able to use SharePoint, Blogger, Twitter and Second Life on the first try. My first Waves are fiascoes.

Google is clearly thinking about adding Wave as a verb like Google, Bing and Tweet. But Google was obvious from the UI, you typed and relieved. Tweet made sense when you looked at the bird, just a quick message chanted out in to the ear seeking a listener. We all know how birds communicate and how we do the same kind of communication in certain social events, Twitter just linked in to a hard wired behaviour.

But waving? If they plan to go up against SharePoint they already had the hurdle of getting people to think in terms of waving and use it in a way that makes sense.

Finally Got My Wave

Finally have my Google Wave account. I am looking forward to testing it, and to creating an object compare with SharePoint. Oh and I might add Wave to my CV out of all of this.

The above image is a sneak preview of 2010.  The main UI change is the ribbon which you can't really get away from.  The main structure of a SharePoint UI from the user view is essentially the same from 2007 to 2010.  This is very much an evolutionary release with enhancements in the back-end more than front end changes.

Collaboration and Content Strategies Blog: Countervailing Wisdom for SharePoint

In April of 2008, we released our advanced SharePoint workshop that describes how to offer "SharePoint as a service" by applying ITIL v3 to SharePoint. Alas, it's taken a while to start publishing this methodology in document form, but I just submitted the first paper on this subject. It's called "ITIL for SharePoint: Defining SharePoint as a Service using ITIL Service Strategy" and is due out in January....

1. Trying to squeeze the most from your SharePoint investment is probably not good for the company
2. Value is different than ROI 
3. Management is different than governance
4. Offering SharePoint as a business service is fundamentally different than offering it as a set of technological capabilities
5. Users of SharePoint shouldn't know what SharePoint is
6. "Driving adoption" is a band aid for poor demand management
7. Internally, SharePoint always has competition; users always have a choice
8. The process of applying a service methodology has value for the organization beyond just the end result

So, Google is learning what collaboration vendors (and many IT strategists) have known for years: selling collaboration technologies is difficult. I am not saying that Google Wave will fail. However, I do not expect Wave to be as successful as GMail, for example, for a long time (if ever).
