CSC Study Identifies Emerging Wave of Disruptive Technologies That Will Reshape Business
FALLS CHURCH, Va., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- CSC (NYSE: CSC) today announced that a wave of disruptive technologies is reshaping industry, triggering new business models and altering consumer and employee behaviors, according to a report issued by CSC's (NYSE: CSC) Leading Edge Forum (LEF).
The report identifies seven "digital disruptions" that 21st century businesses must understand to position themselves for success in an emerging economy that places value predominantly in the production, enhancement and sharing of information and cultural content.
These disruptions represent the next phase in the information revolution precipitated by the launch of the Internet toward the end of the 20th century. They will stimulate the formation of new industries, extend the tremendous gains in productivity brought about by the Internet and challenge existing social, economic, political and cultural norms.
"The 'Networked Information Economy,' to use Harvard Professor Yochai Benkler's term, will come to be defined by waves of digital disruptions that continue to reshape the way we work, the way we socialize and what we value," said Alex Fuss, LEF associate and the report's lead researcher.
"The latest disruptions are powering the formation of this new economy and may be the greatest challenge to the status quo the world has ever seen, and ultimately the greatest driver of productivity."
The seven digital disruptions that will reshape business are:
-- New Media: media is becoming increasingly consumer-driven, interactive, social, customized and personal. Today's consumer is a "proviewer," a source of new content and potential threat to traditional media.
-- Living in a New Reality: we increasingly live in a blended reality that combines physical and virtual reality, improving both. Augmented reality helps businesses manage data centers virtually, students learn about weather patterns by "flying" through them, and consumers shop for clothes by building, and fitting, virtual selves.
-- Social Power: social sites are becoming the starting point or hub of our cyber experience. In the enterprise, social power has revenue power, enabling businesses to quickly tap into expertise to make more informed decisions faster.
-- Information Transparency: information that was once not available now is, shedding light on previously opaque people, places and things. Businesses will be able to "see" all their assets, bringing new levels of safety, efficiency and innovation. Consumers will benefit from highly tailored services such as, eventually, personalized medicine.
-- New Wave of Waves: new hardware and software tools are refining our ability to control radio wave signals. Old business models, like traditional broadcast AM/FM radio, are becoming obsolete. Technologies such as software defined radio and cognitive radio are shattering the need for spectrum allocation. New opportunities and architectures are emerging, such as "viral radio," enabling infinitely scalable networks with no central backbone.
-- Platform Makeover: virtualization and cloud computing are changing today's computing model, enabling anytime, anywhere accessibility for users and applications. Nanotechnology, molecular computing, quantum computing and optical computing will take us beyond silicon, providing greatly increased speed and bringing new applications, opportunities and challenges.
-- Smart(er) World: technology is becoming smarter, gradually approaching and eventually overtaking human ability to appreciate the meaning of patterns, proactively associate and correlate data, reason and make decisions. The future will bring us lifelike virtual assistants, semantic Web search, enterprise applications that identify relationships across data and information technology (IT) systems that give end users the ability to define business processes. Additionally, predictive behavioral software is improving employee performance, safety and productivity, and software that senses brain wave activity is leading to improved lie detection and, eventually, to mind reading.
While these disruptions represent distinct technology developments, many of them overlap, triggering new and more powerful disruptions. Virtual worlds are the next frontier for social networks. Social networks have a strong influence on new media. Information transparency is a prerequisite for a smart(er) world. Innovations with radio waves and wireless applications enhance information transparency. New platforms will turbo-charge the other disruptions.
"Forewarned is forearmed; businesses must be aware of these disruptive technologies if they are to successfully navigate the unprecedented changes we anticipate over the next several years and beyond," said Fuss. "These disruptions will transform the marketplace and society so completely that businesses cannot afford to wait for developments to transpire. They need to dive in head first and begin experimenting with all these technologies have to offer."
The report provides in-depth analysis of each disruption, offering specific examples of how they are shaping the marketplace, and is available for free at URL http //www.csc.com/features/2008/333.shtml.

Windows SharePoint Services - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Changes I have added, please edit as you see fit
Windows SharePoint Services - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe Content Objects hierarchy
Because WSS is primarily used to create html delivered sites in the form of .aspx files it is logical view the WSS object hierarchy starting from that type of object. WSS represents single web pages with the SPWeb object.
The SPWeb class is part of the Microsoft SharePoint Namespace in the Assembly microsoft.sharepoint.dll. This dll is located in the GAC folder. The Web property of the SPContext class returns the SPWeb object of the current Web site. Thus the following C# code sets WebValue to the SPWeb:
- SPWeb WebValue = SPContext.Current.Web;
SharePoint content model allows the creation of SPWeb objects above and below other SPWeb objects. To innumerate subsites from a given SPWeb instance you use the method Webs.
A set of SPWebs can be collected together in a SPSite object. SPSite represents a Site Collection object in SharePoint. A SPSite will have SPContentDatabase object as a parent. This represents the SQL Server database that stores the Web Applications content. Parent to this class is the SPWebApplication object. The database represented by the SPContentDatabase object stores content for the SPWebApplication object. SPWebApplication inherits from the SPWebService class.
The following C# code will set ContentDatabases to the ContentDatabaseCollection
- public SPContentDatabaseCollection ContentDatabases { get; }
Below a SPWeb object is the SPWebList. SPWebList represents the SharePoint list object. Understanding lists is central to understanding how SharePoint manages information. Essentially everything that is managed by SharePoint will be in a list at some level. WSS 3.0 places emphasis upon lists over pages as such.
SPList is composed of distinct elements of the SPListItem. Each SPListItem will have a set of SPFields. SPFields is the lowest object of the hierarchy.Rober1236jua (talk) 16:56, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Understanding the Administrative Object Model of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
Understanding the Administrative Object Model of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
The SharePoint .NET object model. Just to review. SPWebApplication is the Web Application sitting at either a host heater or a port. It is an IIS web site. SPContentDatabase is the SQL Server Database assigned to a Web Application. Web Applicaitons contain one or more sites SPSite, and SPSite contains one or more SPWeb which are pages.
Quoting Microsoft
Some characteristics of the SPWeb class are as follows:
-
An SPWeb object can be a child of another SPWeb object or of an SPSite object. If it is the child of an SPSite object, it is the top-level Web site in its site collection.
-
An SPWeb object has a Webs property that returns a collection of other SPWeb objects; specifically, the immediate child subsites under it.
-
The class has a very rich set of members for programmatic administration and customization of the Web site.
A hierarchy of Web sites always has exactly one top-level Web site. This site is the child of an SPSite object. You can learn more about the top-level Web site in the section Windows SharePoint Services Site Collections later in this article.
Performance Poiont Server is being rolled up in to SharePoint 14
Last week, I covered the announcement that Performance Point Server was being rolled in to SharePoint, and highlighted the sadly light guidance Microsoft provided in its “strategic roadmap” for the future of the various components of Performance Point Server. The Performance Point Server announcement was the first really big announcement related to the upcoming releases of SharePoint and Office, currently code named SharePoint 14 and Office 14. I’ll go out on a limb and gamble that Microsoft will brand as Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010, but only after a significant amount of careful market research. Microsoft also recently announced Exchange 14 with a video on the Exchange Team
Blog.Microsoft has been unusually “tight lipped” about the next versions of the Office and Unified Communications products. While selected organizations are testing the applications, very few analysts, authors, partners, or even MVPs have had the chance to see the current builds.Click here to read more about SharePoint 14 and Office 14

User XSL to customise the blog entry

Now to make further customisations to our blog project we open Office Designer and enter the URL of the web page in Open Site.
Desginer shows the content of SharePoint pages in a WSYWYG tool.
This gives you the ability to edit the XSL code that presents the blog information. You can work with the graphic editor, but I would imagine anyone who is ready to play around with XSL code will know enough to work with the back-end code. It's pretty clean XSL and, as you can see here, adding a new one is fairly simple
So you can customise your blog page to, say, have the categories show up on the top, like with Blogger.com.

Interesting Story on the Fall of US TV Preachers (Yes a New Media Link)
Church-based televangelism led by powerful personalities filled TV in the 1980s, but now only a handful of shows remain, he said. Among the struggling ministries are those of Oral Roberts and the late D. James Kennedy of "The Coral Ridge Hour" TV show.
"I don't see a scenario for maintaining a TV-based megachurch anymore. The days of doing that in the models of Schuller and Jimmy Swaggart and Oral Roberts are over," Schultze said. "It's amazing to me that the 'Hour of Power' was able to keep going as long as it did."
Through a spokesman, Schuller Sr., his family members and other cathedral officials declined to comment. The younger Schuller, 54, did not respond to an e-mail requesting an interview.
