Above is a graph of the tradition World Wide Web of say 1999. The user has an interface to a service or site 9on the web. The interaction is human to machine, usually to get some information to buy something.
This limited model of web interaction is what collapsed so spectacularly in 1999.
Web 1.0 was replaced by Web 2.0. Starting with discussion groups and email and evolving through Social Network sites like Facebook and Wikipedia users started seeing the web as a place to come together, to communicate and collaborate.
The thing is that Web 2.0 is still build with 2D surfaces. Look at the surface of Wikipedia, Facebook or Twitter. It is a flat surface that usually just extends downward. This surface can be seen as a wall restricting communication. It is also dislocated, existing only on your desk top or maybe on your smart phone, but not aware of space. Social Networks are just networks of links without any real knowledge of how they are spatially located.
What is evolving now with Geo-Positioning, mobile computing, the Cloud, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality is the breaking down of the surface that exposes the Internet and the emergence, perhaps, f an Internet everywhere, which creates a shared space we can collaborate with other people and other components.
The Internet is not longer a surface facing us but a inclusive environment. The Internet starts to become exposed in coffee cups, in your shoes, in the front of stores. You move in the same virtual space with different devices using the Cloud to link your combined experience.
