The first is a modification of the wide search results.

Then you can edit the page by going to Site Actions > Edit Page:

This approach only gets you so far, the tags on the top of Search can not be removed in the browser.

So its time to open the page in Designer

Now I think that you probably need to use an experienced HTML/SharePoint developer to modify the ASP.NET code behind the page to produce a wide page.

I am going to continue to play around with this and see how it goes.
